The UC family includes more than 201,000 students, 160,000 faculty and staff, 35,000 retirees and more than 1.2 million living alumni.” The University of California, San Diego UCSDは、以下のような評価を受けています。 “Innovation is our tradition: Nestled along the Pacific Ocean on 1,200 acres of coastal woodland, UCSD is a powerful magnet for those seeking a fresh, next-generation approach to education and research. Academic Rankings: The National Research Council ranks UCSD 10th in the nation in the quality of its faculty and graduate programs. (The top ten, in rank order, are: UC Berkeley, MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, CalTech, Yale, Chicago, Cornell and UCSD.) The NRC ranks oceanography and neurosciences 1st in the nation.” The University of California's Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) 私が留学したIR/PSは、アメリカの他の大学院にはみられないユニークな存在です。 “The University of California's Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) is unique among U.S. graduate schools in its focus on the economic, political, and business relations of the Pacific Rim, encompassing both the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region.” Geisel Library UCSDにおいて、システムとしても、建築としても優れたものとして定評があります。 UCSDの各図書館を通じて、UC全体の蔵書が利用できます。 “On December 1, 1995 The University Library Building was renamed Geisel Library in honor of Audrey and Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) for the generous contributions they have made to the library and their devotion to improving literacy.” UCSDの学生生活 遙か向こうに太平洋を望むオーシャンビューの、学内にある学生寮。しかし、実際には全員がこのような寮に住めるわけではなく、近隣の高価なアパートを、複数の学生が部屋をシェアして住んでいる場合が多いそうです。 UCSDがあるラ・ホーヤ UCSDがある地域は、サンディエゴのなかでもとくに美しい海岸をもつラ・ホーヤとよばれます。ラ・ホーヤには海岸に接する公園、美術館、ホテル、レストラン、画廊、ブティックなどがあり、夏には大きな規模の音楽会も開かれます。(La Jolla Music Society)
